I’ve been dabbling for years in all different ways to earn money on the internet.

What is great about this event was that there was a room full of wannabe Self-publishers. During the day there was a wealth of publishing opportunities presented to them and all the entrance fees went to a local charity.

I’ve often marvelled at the niche the Da Vinci Code is pitched at.
(and this post is worth gold to a budding author!)
(or exactly how we wrote our book)

Having read several books on the subject before the Da Vinci Code I was really interested.
The books I read were fairly heavy on the subjecyt and often the author was pushing a particulay band wagon.
- Jesus’s body is buried in France
- The bloodline still exists
- The cult Jesus belonged to
- What did the Catholic Church really know and what was covered uo.

puts a lot of this in to a good context.

The niche that Dan Brown took was writing something that put many non-fiction books in to a context and language that many people could understand. Of course many serious scholars had covered this niche, and lots of non-fiction writers but there are millions of people that dont need all the cross references and lengthy support of circumstantial co-incedences.

The message is just as Eoin says …

“You can have a book that to the elite appears predictable
and clunky but raises the pulse of the majority of readers.”

“if you cannot create a reason for a book to be bought then
there will be no sales.”

Dan Brown put in to context for me a lot of the books I had read thqat now sit on my book shelf probably never to be read again because they are all a small part in the puzzle.

As a result of Dan Brown I also uncovered a niche ….
and published an eBook together with a scholar.

We set up a web page that people reached via a google advertisment like the following …

On this page we had a question like ….

What is the one major question you had after reading the DaVinci code?

People could enter their question and boy did they do that …

… thousands of them

Look at the stats …

The advertisment appeared on 1,684,102 pages.
People reached these pages after seqarching for things like “opus dei” “priory of sion” “mary magdalene” etc

Once they reached the pages our advertisment was on 33,644 of them CLICKED on our advertisment and went to the questionaire page.
… and hundreds of them asked questions.
Questions like ….

So once we received these questions we wrote the book …

So … following on from Eoin’s statement …
“if you cannot create a reason for a book to be bought then
there will be no sales.”

We had the questions people wanted answering and went out and wrote them.

That is how we wrote the book!

We sold thousands of books as a result.
This was long before the Da Vinci hysteria and the film.

“Blooks”
– books based on blogs or Web sites — are a growth market for Lulu.
On a recent list of the company’s 100 top-selling books, 20 were based
on content first produced for the Web.

Lulu played up its affinity with bloggers earlier this
year by sponsoring the Blooker Prize, the first literary prize for
blooks. It won Lulu tons of free publicity and played up the company’s
natural affinity with bloggers. “Blogging is self-publishing,” Fraser
said.

David Warlick, an education consultant in North Raleigh, has published a book through a traditional publisher and published a book through Lulu.

His royalties for the Lulu book, “Classroom
Blogging: A Teacher’s Guide to the Blogosphere,” were 40 percent
higher. In addition, the Lulu book sold more copies in its first year
and Warlick liked having total control of the book.

“Having
worked through a publisher, I didn’t have input on the layout,” Warlick
said. “I didn’t have input on the cover. I was urged to include
information in the book I didn’t entirely agree with. It turned out to
be a better book … but it wasn’t the book that I intended.”

Warlick also writes a blog, or Web log, and is considering turning it into a book that he would self-publish through Lulu.

50 /50 Split is Better Than Recording Artists Get! Long Live Authors!

Spotted in the middle of the Random House announcement regarding a new “business model” for digital book content, under which the publisher will sell books to web retailers on a pay-per-view basis, was a promise to split revenues evenly with authors.

Since standard trade contracts generally stipulate a 50-50 split for digital permissions between publishers and authors, Random House will pay trade-book authors two cents each time someone reads a book page, with the retailer paying four cents per page-view. Those pennies could add up very quickly for writers with even a small audience—a 350-page novel would theoretically net its creator $7 each time it is read—and could eventually blur the line between traditional publishing and “self-publishing” if writers elect to bypass publishers altogether, instead selling their books directly online.

The permissions arrangement for e-book viewing represents a dramatic improvement over standard author royalties—which generally top out at 15% for hardcover books, 7.5% for paperbacks. The Random House proposal is also a sweeter deal than is the norm for recording artists, who, according to estimates, generally receive between 10 and 15 cents for every song downloaded through Apple’s iTunes store, which typically retail at 99 cents. By contrast, a 20 page e-book segment, with a suggested retail price of 99 cents, would net the writer 40 cents.
